Is an international degree worth it?
Often NRIs land up in India for their further studies and suddenly face a reality check. More often than not, they find it difficult to cope up here, atleast initially. They realise the enormity of competition prevailing in the country and the limit upto which each individual is ready to go to achieve what they've set out for.
We tend to think that we are no less than them, failing to realise that certain traits are just not inherent to us.
This nothing to do with aptitude. It is because of difference in breeding. For example, the stiff competition in the entrance exams here is nerve-racking and extremely demanding. Then, there is the issue of choosing the right option. A Master's Degree in the core field or an international degree in collaboration with a foreign university. But this is where we need to connect our dots.
Think about long-term gains viz-a-viz short-term fulfilment. What does an international degree have to offer us?Where do we decide to settle down in the near future? Most importantly consider the return on investment factor. I would definitely suggest to stick on to Indian education. The country is booming in the education sector and will only progress after the advent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his varied plans in the sector. Considering B-schools, if you fail to get through to the top 20, take up a school say till 25. It wouldn't make much of a difference, since in the long run it anyways gets levelled out. This is a safer bet than going in for say a renowned institute offering an international degree with a tie up with certain universities abroad. Yes, these programmes may develop your personality and peer group will be from various cultures; however, what are you doing your management degree for?
In case of other interests, there are great institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology(NIFT, Delhi), National Institute of Design (NID, Ahmedabad), Kala Bhavan (Vishwa Bharati University, Shantiniketan) which are Crème de la crème of their fields. Institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs), Indian Institute of Science(IISc, Bangalore), National Institute of Technology(NIT) can be most definitely fought for in the engineering field.
We need to review our options instead of going for the easy way out. Moreover, the placement factor is not that prevalent in case of such international tieups and again Indian job market is on a rise in 2015. These are mostly one-year courses wherein it is rushed up and not much recognised in the job sector. Instead whatever you choose to do from the premiere institutes mentioned above, irrespective of the field, wont matter since these are all international brands in themselves. We often tend to take the easy way out owing to our upbringing. However, it is this time that we must stay still, have patience and work our way through these top colleges. India with its huge populaton has lots to offer.
So, instead of immediately flocking abroad, we must do our research on what we want to do and which university in the country will offer that course.
